Amphissa
was the most important city of Western Locris. According to literary sources,
its fortification was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt during the pre-Christian
period. The sections with the polygonal masonry antedate the destruction of the
city by Philip, the king of Macedonia, in 338 B.C.
Several parts of the ancient
wall were repaired and new sections were built during the Frankish occupation,
in the 13th century A.D., and the Turkish occupation, later on. The Medieval castle,
known as the Castle of Salona, was built of irregular stones, mudbricks and plaster,
over the remaining sections of the ancient fortification.
