Since March 2001, Athens International Airport keeps offering high-level services, having earned the trust of airlines, passengers, partners, and stakeholders. Having welcomed throughout this period more than 370 million passengers and over 4 million flights, the airport keeps creating significant value for the national, regional & local economy, its shareholders, all stakeholders, and the wider public, continuously seeking to enhance the connectivity of Athens, as a city-break, year-round sustainable destination.
In terms of traffic, the year 2023 ended with Athens International Airport’s traffic amounting to 28.17 million passengers, exceeding the 2022 levels by 24% and higher than the respective 2019 levels by 10.2%. At the same time, Athens International Airport connected travellers from over 156 destinations in 57 countries, on more than 65 airlines.
Key contributors to this positive outlook remain the Airport Company’s (AIA) renowned route development and airline marketing strategy, with one of the most comprehensive and innovative airline incentive schemes internationally and a strategic focus on the promotion of "Destination Athens" through initiatives and synergies. Having repeatedly been awarded by the Airports Council International as Best Airport in Europe in terms of service quality and passenger satisfaction, AIA continues, during 2024, its investment programme of aesthetic, functional and operational enhancements at its premises.
Since 2016, Athens International Airport is the 1st Carbon Neutral airport in Greece and, as of 2019, through its initiative "Route 2025", AIA announced its official commitment to achieve Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2025, 25 years ahead of the target of 2050 set by ACI Europe.
Thanks to the airport’s top-notch services, AIA has earned more than 120 significant international distinctions and awards. The airport community, with more than 400 companies and 17,000 employees, constitutes one of the biggest "employment engines" in Greece, generating growth, jobs, and value.
