Colophon was one of the member cities of the Ionian Confederacy, the
Paniones, grouping cities founded in Asia
Minor by Ionians fleeing the southern shores of the gulf
of Corinth west of Sicyon
in northern Peloponnese when
the area was conquered by Achaeans.
Colophon was the birthplace of the philosopher Xenophanes.
