The lighthouse was built in 1960. The height of the tower is 8 meters and its focal plane is 9 meters. The radio-lighthouse at Axios Delta, with 7 nautical miles luminescence, replaced in 1960 the smaller floating lamps, which they led until then the ships to a safe seaport. The Swedish company Aga constructed it and except the light signals sends out also sound signals.
The access to the lighthouse is by road from Malgara toll post or through Kalochori. Axios lighthouse, at the end of the road, marks the pass from Thessaloniki bay to Thermaikos gulf. There is the closest spot of the gulf, 5.5 km width, between the Vardaris and Megalo Emvolo (at Angelochori) capes.
Along to the stone lighthouse at Angelochori they delimit the entrance of Thessaloniki port.
