The lighthouse was built in 1887. The height of the cylindrical tower is 7 meters and its focal plane 36 meters. It’s located right opposite the Venetian castle of Chora, the capital of Andros island. It is the only lighthouse that is built on a rock in the middle of the sea.
The lighthouse was first operated in 1st January of 1897 and it was an E class binocular with luminescence of 11 nautical miles. It’s located on the homonymous rock on the left side of Andros port. In 1943 was destroyed by the Germans and in 1950, within the frame of reorganization of lighthouses network, operated as automatic acetylene but on an iron-knitted column above the old ruins. In 1994, thanks to a Goulandris family donation, the tower was reconstructed to its initial form and since then operates as automatic acetylene.
