ACHAIA (Prefecture) GREECE
A place of great natural beauty, Achaia will tempt you with its variety
of mountain and coastal landscapes because it offers endless possibilities for
exploration and outdoor activities. To have a swim and relax we recommend the
beaches of Monodendri and
Vrachnaika that are west of
Patra.
Beautiful stone houses blend in with the natural environment and are
the perfect setting for entertainment and its cosmopolitan life-style. The same
could be said of Tsoukalaika,
Kaminia and Kato Achaia, whose
scenery, and lively nightlife attract many visitors. On the western side of the
cape, Yianniskari beach extends a warm welcome and offers an escape from the hectic
pace of modern life. If one is looking for a wide range of facilities, then the
beach of Kalogria is the place
to go. It has an excellent sandy beach that slopes gently to the shores of the
Ionian.
East of Patra one should go to the nearby beach of Rio,
which is popular and has all the facilities one might need. The neighbouring beach
of Psathopirgo is a picturesque
fishing village with crystal clear calm waters and visitors all year round. Next
to it is Panagopoula and Labiri,
two beaches with pristine waters in beautiful surroundings where one can enjoy
fresh fish and local delicacies. The night life at the neighbouring beach of Loggo
lasts until the early hours of the morning as it does in Selianitika
and Akolis which have developed rapidly into the most cosmopolitan beaches in
the area (they also offer water sports). East of the town of Aigio
are beaches with organised campsites and popular seaside restaurants. Many seasonal
shops and hotels can be found at Nikolaika
and Rodia where the sea is clean and tourism has increased significantly, while
at Elaiona there is an organised
campsite. Diakopto, immediately
to the east, is a fine resort in a cosy bay with a small harbour and is one of
the prettiest settings in the Corinthian gulf. The coastal region of Akrata
(Krathio) has excellent tourist facilities for its large numbers of visitors,
while the attractive settlement of Aigira
marks the borders with the prefecture of Corinthia, and captivates the visitor
with its marvellous beaches and the dazzling Greek colour.

ETOLOAKARNANIA (Prefecture) GREECE
The visitor here can enjoy the charms of both mountains and sea. Famed
for its ecological wealth, Etoloakarnania possesses long stretches of coastline
with numerous beaches. After a pleasant 15-minute ferry ride from Rio to Antirio,
one arrives at the beautiful town of Nafpaktos, built amphitheatrically on a pine-clad
slope. The sight of the famous castle and its traditional settlement is enchanting.
A few kilometres away are the beaches Psani and Gribovo which are run by the Greek
Tourist Board (E.O.T) and have facilities for various water sports. The chief
features of this region are its golden sandy beaches and the wonderful view across
Patraikos gulf. On the western side, after Messolongi, is the enchanting Etoliko,
a picturesque place with a long naval tradition and rich folk culture. A short
distance away are the beaches of Stamanas and Rebakia. Continuing this pleasant
journey, one reaches the cosmopolitan Astakos,
where the nightlife lasts until the wee hours of the morning. Astakos is a pretty
town built on a steep slope overlooking the sea. It is also ideal for quiet holidays
as the imposing mountains, endless pine forests and deep blue of the sea give
the area a peaceful air.
In the province of Vonitsa are the towns of Mytikas
and Vonitsa. The area has a cool climate, harmonious combinations of scenery and
hospitable inhabitants who keep secret recipes for all the marvellous dishes of
Greek cuisine. Fresh fish and seafood are the order of the day as well as excellent
local dishes. Eating out here is a ritual in itself. Let the aromas carry you
away and discover something new even in the humble tomato sauce. After you have
finished your meal, you can complete this itinerary in the area of Amfilochia.
Here you will gain long-lasting memories that will draw you back to the hospitable
land of Etoloakarnania.

ILIA (Prefecture) WEST GREECE
In Ilia the visitor will be captivated by the endless beaches of golden
sand and pine-clad mountains overlooking fertile valleys. Pyrgos,
the capital, with its huge sand dunes will be a pleasant surprise and the air
is heavy with the refreshing scent of pine. About 3 km further on, is Zacharo,
which has a fine beach of golden sand and clean waters. There are restaurants,
bars and hotels, so one combines a drive with refreshments. Continuing towards
the borders of the prefecture one comes across a small group of villages with
marvellous beaches that are well worth a visit. Among them is Kakobato,
which has a lovely beach, while Neochori attracts people looking for peace and
quiet.
The settlements of Kato
Taxiarches and Yianitsochori
are perfect places to have a carefree holiday with starry summer nights and the
restful sound of waves to lull you to sleep. With Pyrgos as a starting point again,
one can visit the nearby pretty village of Katakolo,
which is one of the prefecture's two main ports. Despite this, it is a peaceful
place with intense Greek colour and character. Its beaches have all the tourist
facilities one might need, such as hotels, restaurants and bars. Very near is
the attractive bay of Aghios Andreas whose beach is usually lively and full of
young people attracted by the numerous water-sports on offer.
Leaving the sea behind for a while will give you the opportunity to
meet the hospitable people of the village of Skafidia.
This is a good example of a traditional Greek village with natural shade in the
yards from the overhanging vines, mulberry trees and small taverns with genuine
Greek dishes and local delicacies to replenish all the calories you've lost during
the day. If one wants to stay the night, there are hotels and rooms to rent in
the surrounding area.
Those who want to catch the rising sun can set off early to explore
the northern end of the prefecture with the turquoise waters in the area of Kylini.
For camping we recommend the organised beaches of Ioniko,
Thines, Glyfa, Loutra
Kyllinis, and Kalamia.
If one wants a rest from endless hours on the beach the nearby towns of Andravida,
Vartholomio and Lechaina
provide a change of scenery.
