The Municipal District of Ahlada is 23 km away from Heraklion. It is a mountainous area at an average altitude of 189m. The settlement of Ahlada which is situated on top of the hill that dominates Agia Pelagia, is a model of a farming settlement. In spite of an interesting old part and the astonishing view, a shift of the productive activity of the inhabitants towards the coastline of the Municipal District has been noted.
Τhe entire area is characterized by smooth hills where olive groves are dominant while at the bays of Agia Pelagia and Lygaria there are sandy beaches for swimming and tourism activities are dominant. The sea and the morphology of the ground on the hills are deemed to be the most significant factors of the district, which has resulted in the upgrading of the tourist product provided. ACHLADOKAMBOS (Village) ARGOLIS
Achladokampos is an amphitheatrical village with stony houses, 35km away from Argos. This is where Argolida and Arcadia County are linked.
Achladokampos was once the larges among the villages. Now, it still retains its ‘supremacy’, as there are many well-maintained houses a large church, a school, a nice square and a building with hot bath.
At the foot of Partheni Mountain Range were once many wild pear-trees. It is said that Achladokampos was named after them (Achladi=pear). At least, this is one version. The other says that the village was named after the olive trees. Specifically, when a Turkish aga came in view of the plain full of olive trees, he exclaimed ‘Ach! Ladokampe!’ (Ach= exclamation, Ladokampos= plain with olive trees).
On the whole, Achladokampos is a village based on cattle raising. The locals still maintain old customs and they are ready to enjoy themselves by organising feasts on Trinity Sunday and Pentecost.

AETOS (Settlement) TRIKALA
The elders remember it with the name Dovroi which means "fine place". The distance from the national road of Trikala - Arta until the today's village is small and its altitude reaches the 700 m. Northwards and eastwards is surrounded by tall, steep and rocky mountains.
Westwards there is the long ridge which begins from the Stayros mountain, comes down steeply to the location of Paliokoromylia and continues downhill till the Mill of the Kokkinos torrent. Southerly of the passage the plain land of Loggas is shaped.
Benchmark of the village's communal life is the paving, capacious, central square with the traditional cafe and the historical churches of Panagia and Agia Paraskevi. At the entrance of the village there is the stone school, which however today due to the lack of students remains closed. The few permanent residents are occupied mostly with the cattle-breeding and occasionally with the fishing and hunting. However, during the summertime everything lives up and at the revelry of Agia Paraskevi for two days the village celebrates and the celebrators revive the traditional customs of the region.

We do not know if the village called Agariones is the one mentioned as Arioni in the monasteries' documents of 1355 or the one referred to as Kariones in the codes of Pantokratoros Monastery. Anyway, the Monastery of Pantokratoros seemed to have had a significant property in region: The farmhouse of Ano Chorion, the Monastery of Christ's Metamorphosis and a tower called Alexopyrgos. This tower was built in honour of the founder of Pantokratoros Monastery, Alexios Komninos or Alexios Strategopoulos.

AGATHONISSI (Island) DODEKANISSOS
Agathonisi is the north most islet of the Dodecanese island complex.
The coast configurations of the island are quite impressive. There are many beautiful and windless bays as are: Hohlia, St. George, Poro and Maistro as well as their small promontories.
The surface of the islet is comprised of rocky and barren hills. Areas appropriate for agriculture are very few indeed. The vegetation cover is poor and bushy. The tree cover is sparse and the varieties are mainly olive, carob, almond, fig and prickly pear.
Fresh water springs do not exist except for a few wells with brackish water. Water for the inhabitants is collected by way of rainwater cisterns that are filled by water carrying tankers in times of drought.
The island of Agathonisi was named Yetousa in ancient times. According to contemporary researches today's name is the result of an etymological mistake from the plant from which the name is derived “Agathonisi”, i.e. Island of the Thorns.
A few ancient relics that were found on the island allow us to surmise that Yetousa was inhabited from ancient times.
The island was probably finally inhabited permanently in the middle of the 19th century by settlers from Patmos and Fourni. There is a witness of there being established on the island some five or six families in the year 1895.
Today the population of the island is 112 people. After the incorporation of the Dodecanese to the rest of Greece, the island fell under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Patmos of the province Kalymnos, with the name of “Agathonisi” or Gadaros-“Donkey” (because the shape of the island resembles a donkey galloping towards the river Maiandros). In 1953 it became a separate community and has remained so until today.
The oldest settlement is Megalo Chorio- “Big Village” with 80 inhabitants. The village has been built in such a way so that it is not visible from the sea, thus protecting it from pirates. Built in the same way and for the same reason is Mikro Chorio -"Small Village" with 15 inhabitants. The third and newest settlement is St. George with 15 inhabitants and is found in the innermost part of the bay from which its name is derived. Both the bay and the village were named under the church of St. George found there which also happens to be the parish church of the island. There are also five chapels built in various places on the island.
The quiet life on the island, the calm, the hospitality of the locals, the cleanliness of the beaches and the fresh fish which a visitor is able to enjoy, since the cooking is done according to traditional recipes, all make Agathonisi an ideal place for those who wish for quiet holidays away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist routes.

AGIA ERMIONI (Settlement) CHIOS
The road past Karfas continues along bushes of scented mastic and thyme, passes the Plaka, which was a large vineyard area during the Genovese period and reaches the area of Agia Ermioni. This is a very old site, sea sprinkled settlement of historic Votes (former boat shelters and now summer cottages) on the shore and the picturesque chapel of Agia Ermioni built in 1754. Here we see the Mantraki (the small marina) embraced by jagged rocks, where the fishermen find refuge from the mania of the South winds.
In the years of the World War II occupation, this was a German guard post. It was also here that where Chian boatmen risked their lives by stealing boats from the German soldiers to transport Greek patriots across the sea where they could go on to the Middle East.
Today Agia Ermioni boasts newly-built hotels, pensions, tavernas and various shops for the convenience of the visitor. It is an ideal place to relax.

AGIA FOTINI BEACH (Settlement) CHIOS
Continuing on the main road, further down to the left, is a small road that leads to Agia Fotia (Saint Fotini). According to tradition this chapel was built on a Vato, a bushy area. The story is that for many nights, the villagers of Neochori saw flames leaping from these bushes. When they finally ventured to this area, they found an icon of Saint Fotini laying there. So they built the chapel on this very spot and every year, on August 12, the day the icon was discovered, they hold a festival in celebration. Further on we come to the shore of Agia Fotini, a beautiful pebbled beach with clear, blue -green water. The area is charming and abounds with traditional taverns, rented rooms and various shops for the visitor's convenience.

There was once a king of the island who decided to distribute it to his two sons. So he decided that the best would be if each of his two sons started to walk from the two extreme points of the island, Myrina and Plaka. The point where they would meet would be the center and would become the border of each one's possession. Curiously they met where the village of Aghios Demetrios is built today. The one walking form Plaka had started much earlier than the other one. So the other one called him "lera", which in Greek means deceit. Since then the village was named Lera. It was one of the few villages on the island with Turkish population before 1912. After the population exchanges, 556 refugees from Reis Dere of Asia Minor settled in the village and named it Aghios Demetrios. Aghios Demterios was their patron Saint at Reis Dere. They used to cultivate vineyards and produce most of the Limnian vine. Most of them are excellent musicians.

AGIOS EFSTRATIOS (Island) NORTH AEGEAN
The famous geographer of antiquity, Pausanias, claimed that Agios Ephstratios's island emerged from the sea the time the Homeric Chrisi sank in the north part of Lemnos. Furthermore he determines that time of the geologic changes in 197 B.C. because of the fact that the island was a new one in the northeast Aegean it was called "Nea", which means new.
Although there are not many indications, however, we can say that the island was inhabited in the prehistoric period and specifically, in Mycenaean times. There are plenty of remains of the historic period - columns, coins, fragments of vessels, pieces of sculpture.

Agios Mamas is a village with a population of 1342 inhabitants, located between the Kassandra and the Sithonia peninsulas.
Its waterfront settlements "Portes", "Varkes" and "Gremia", located towards Thermaikos Bay, include the largest hotels and Municipal camping sites.
There are new holiday settlements that are currently under development at Agios Mamas beaches on the Toroneos Bay side.
The village is famous throughout Greece for its "Agios Mamas trade fair", a pole of attraction for thousands of visitors in early September.
History:
The oldest known organized settlement in the area of Agios Mamas was located in the hillock of the same name (where there are currently excavations taking place) and had been in existence since as early as 5000 BC.
However, the oldest known records attesting to the existence of the village - with its current name, what is more - are Mount Athos documents of 1047 BC.
In 1423 the Ottomans subjugated Agios Mamas. In the mid-15th century the village belonged to an Ottoman ruler (Michael Bei). In 1821 the inhabitants of the village played an active part in the Greek revolution. The first known historical attestation to the trade and cattle fair dates back to 1870.
The village took its name from Agios Mamas.

In the sources Tzjom, Mana, Fteri, Kanalako, Megakampo and Pergina of Padi plateau, are often seen roe deers, wolves, foxes, ferrets and some time bears.
From the big monastery of Agios Prokopios of the 18th century, which was extended in an area of 48 acres above the village, the only thing that remained afterwards its demolition in 1960, is ruins. In 1986 the temple of Ag. Prokopios went up from pedestals. Along with Agjos Prokopios, the name of a Saint is connected, Kosmas the Aitolos and that of a thief, Gioulas. The village celebrates the memory of Agios Prokopios on July 8, with dixies and folk revelry that follow the service.

Agios Vissarion Community

AGIOS VISSARION (Village) TRIKALA
In the historical community of Agiou Vissariona (230 m. el.) we arrive either by following the street that leads to that from Filyra, through a most beautiful meadow, or from the side of Pyli's that is hardly two kilometres far. The village owes his old name "Dousiko" in an endemic of the place species of oak with the (slavic) name Dousko or Douskari.
The first resident of the village appears registered in the community's male records since 1832, when it was under Douskar's courthouse.   Dousiko, built near the Portaikos river, has very healthy climate, which its 1.100 residents enjoy (in the winter - they are increased to 1280 in the summertime), farmers and cattle-breeders, but also "petrades" (builders of the stone) - and along with them the seasonal visitors. In a small distance from the village is found the forest "Lakka of Stefani's" and the breeding area of preys of Koziaka.
The nearest crowns of Koziaka are Krania (1.100 m.) and Fourketsa (500 m.). A watermill, Nizeros, is saved 2 km from the village as well as the fountains Psilles Vrises, Giannaki Vrisi and Gabriel Vrisi. The latter is connected with the village with an old path, in all the length of which one meets stone manufactures. Beautiful area for relaxation, where the residents go at the 1st of May, is the meadow Dara.
The village was connected with the famous abbey of the Savior of the Big Pylon, which is found in a distance of 5 km from there, going up in altitude of 750 m. in the Koziaka's slopes. The monastery was re-established between 1527 - 1535 by Agjos Vissarionas, Larissa's archbishop, when the Saint was exarch of Stagon.
In the place of the church that Agjos Vissarionas built with the help of his brother Ignatios, it was built on pedestals in 1557 the today's catholic of the abbey from Larissa's Metropolite Neofyto the 2nd and the bishops of Dimitriados Joseph, Litza Louka and Torch Torture (as the ktitoric sign witnesses). The catholic, which is honoured in the name of Metamorphosis of the Savior, follows the mount athos type of cruciate four - pillar, with two (today) domes and slots in its northern and southern side. Its hagiography was done by a painter from Constantinople, Georgy. The woodcut temple is ulterior, in 1813. The once rich monastery with the 365 cells and the rich library, which became an intellectual centre of the newer Hellenism, functions today with few monks that look after its heirlooms. Among them are also the saint's scull, the will with his autographic signature, the stick and the vestments of Agios Vissarionas.
The grave of the Saint is saved in the Community cemetery, while in the village the local show the place of his house and the monastery dependency of the abbey. In 1823 the monastery was destroyed and the 2000 volumes of its library were burned by the Albanians of P. Kortzia. In 1943 the monastery suffered new destructions from a fire. Agjos Vissarionas celebrates in the feast of Saint Spirit and in the memory of the Saint from whom it took its current name, on 14 September. In Agiou Vissariona's Eve the residents of the village go up in the monastery for adoration and spend all night there for the celebration of the Saint.

AGISTRI (Village) AEGINA
Agistri's capital was used in ancient times as a base of naval operations and as point of rearmament.
Crystal-clear blue waters in natural coves create sandy areas for swimming. Scenic tiled lanes, traditional cafes (kafeneia), decrepit figures dressed in the local-style attire, and the windmill, all contribute to the lively history of the island.
Stone-built houses, fresh-painted white walls, clay-tiled roofs, outdoor house oves, orderly clean yards meet the modern-built hotel units. Cafe-Bars, Ouzo-snack-cafes, Restaurants and Night Clubs are ready to serve any one of you that will visit our island.
Further away and on top of a hill deep in the pine-tree forest is the little church of "Agion Panton" (All Saints), it stands there through the passing of time and calls the visitor to gain the knowledge of the island's roots, and that's how he discover "Kandouki", the old village, that is, whatever remains from some much older settlement.
Leaving Megalochori heading west you find yourself in a magical place that combines in absolute harmony the green of the pine-tree and the deep blue of the sea.
The trees that, with the passing of time, bend curving into the sea and almost embrace the waters and the boats at the old shipyard bear witness for the hundreds of years that they are there.
The recently asphalt paved road leads us further west of the island at a place that the signs say that is called 'Dragonera'. Besides the single little restaurant there everything else has remained untouched.
Crystal clear waters, natural beaches, pine trees that reach the shores, quietness and stillness are just part of the riches that nature offers with generosity there. And the road continues south uphill, then downhill, and we reach a glade, an oasis full of history for the old-timers but a magical place for the visitor. It is 'Polemi' with the old church of St. Barbara with the fortune to be consecrated by St. Nektarios.

AGRA (Lake) PELLA
At a short distance from Edessa, Lake Agra-Nisiou-Vritton is situated. The lake was artificially created during the 50s to cover the needs in water of a small hydroelectric power plant of the Public Electricity Board, but rapidly developed into an area with particular ecological interest, since it hosts and supports a great number of bird species. The wet meadows, the aquatic vegetation and the water create in the area of springs a unique natural scenery, while the agricultural landscape is dominated by apple and cherry cultivations, which gives rise to the organization of local festivities and fairs.

AGRIOLIVADI (Beach) PATMOS
Agriolivadi is approximately 1.5 km from Skala. It has a long sandy beach with small pebbles. Sun beds and water sports are available. It also has a taverna and a beach bar. Its mainly shallow waters make it ideal for toddlers and the water is warmer than in most other beaches around the island.
There are some nice little coves at the northern part of the beach which are accessible only by boat or you can rent paddle boats and paddle there but only in good weather because the currents do get strong as soon as you reach the end of the cove.
Agia Thekla (Saint Thekla) is a little island opposite the cove. It is named after the church that was built on it. There is also a nice beach at the rocky island for those who can paddle out to it.

Agriovotano Community

AGRIOVOTANO (Village) ISTIEA
According to tradition its name stems from the weeds ("agriovotana") growing in the region. Even though it covers a small area, it offers a spectacular view. From the small square of the village the visitor can discern the mountain Pilio and, weather permitting, even Athos. A passable dirt road leads from the village to the beach "Koutsoubri" where there are picturesque taverns. The beach is ideal for windsurfing and jet-skiing. The luxuriant vegetation and the long beach compose a unique colourful scenery.

Legend has it that the name of the village of Agrossikia originated from the wild fig trees that smothered the area.
The village's inhabitants are by and large of Pontos origin since the older inhabitants had pretty much moved from surrounding areas. The refugees arrived periodically since 1934 from the areas of Pontos, Sevastia, the town of Charsera in Argiroupolis and Farassa of Kessaria. The reason they decided to built their new home here is the similarity of the landscape with that of the land the left behind. They carried nothing but their memories and the icons of their Saints, some of which are still kept in the church of St. Ioannis Chrisostomos in the center of the village. The three cultural clubs connected with the inhabitant's origin of St. George Chalinaras, the Cultural Club and the Farassotes Club have undertaken the higher duty to preserve the rich cultural tradition of their ancestors.
Agrossikia is built in a picturesque landscape of unique natural beauty and is an excellent recreation area.
On the evergreen hill of Profitis Ilias, where a celebration is held every year with opulent events, the visitor can enjoy the uniquely beautiful landscape. The Dam lake pops up first in front of the highlands of Paikos mountain. The hill with the ruins of the ancient castle of Pelitis is witness to human presence in the area from ancient times.

In the past, it had beautiful and big houses but they were burned during the second world war. In short distance outside the village it is still preserved the Archangels Monastery of Goura, built in a roch, where there is also the children camping area of Holy Metropolis for Driinoupoli - Pogoniani and Konitsa. It is worth visiting the traditional water mill near Bourazani bridge.

Akrata Community

AKRATA (Small town) ACHAIA
The beautiful town of Akrata, built on the coastline and offering azure blue seawater views, wonderful beaches, and modern tourist services, will deeply affect those who desire to combine relaxation and adventure during their holidays.
Akrata, as well as the picturesque beaches of the surrounding villages of Trapeza, Platanos, and Egira attract a large number of vacationers during the summer months.
The remains of Ancient Egira, the famous ancient theatre, as well as traces of the ancient city of Aeges, which was destroyed around 281 B.C.
The post-Byzantine Monastery of Agia Triada is built in the suburbs of Akrata, a lovely and hospitable place. About 20 kms. away from the town the visitor meets Seliana, where traces of ancient Felloi mentioned by Pausanias in "Ahaika" have been discovered. The post-Byzantine Monastery of Agioi Apostoloi and the State Game Sanctuary belong to Perithori, about 4 kms. southern of Seliana.
Rahova, close to Perithori, is the place where the "Greek School", one of the first ones established in Greece after liberation from the Turks, operated from 1829 to 1837. This is the place where many historical personalities of the 1821 Revolution, as well as distinguished clergymen, such as the Patriarchs of Jerusalem Dositheos and Chrysanthos, were acclaimed.
The mountainous areas southern of Akrata are of particular tourist interest, as they offer o delightful view over the Limni tou Tsivlou and the other scenic and historically important Kloukinokhoria (villages), such as Agridi, Messorouggi, Peristera, Solos, Zarouchla etc. These villages scattered in dense fir forests, keep the folk tradition vivid and alive.
The Byzantine church of Panagia stands in Zarouchla, whereas on the slopes of Khelmos the visitor finds the popular Spring of Golfo taken from Sryros Perisiadis’ play under the same name. Peresiadis’ mansion still stands in Messorouggi where the church of Agios Georgios with the wooden hand carved temple is located. Argyriadis’ tower in Agia Varvara and the house of chieftain Theocharopoulos compose two of the most significant historical points of reference to the mountainous cluster of villages known as Kloukinohoria.
After a three-hour walk past Solos village one reaches the mythically eternal Waters of the Styx, by which, in Greek mythology, the Gods of Olympus swore solemnly. Thetis is said to have bathed her son Achilles in the Waters of the Styx and thereafter he became invulnerable. The visitor can walk from Styx direct to Mega Spileo crossing through the wonderfully steep slopes of Khelmos.
