Byzantine church of the Panagia

FODELE (Village) GAZI
The Byzantine church of the Panagia, northwest of the village, is built on the remains of a seventh century church. The older church was a basilica with three aisles. The newer church, dating from the beginning of the second Byzantine period (11C) has the typical cruciform style of the Byzantine churches. The two axis of the cross are higher than the rest of the church which has a rectangular perimeter. A dome with windows is on top of the church and the windows around the church are decorated with bricks and arches. The church contains many remains of frescoes in addition to a marble relief from the earlier church representing a wild animal and two wild goats.

Monastery of St. Panteleimon at Fodele

MONI AGIOU PANTELEIMONOS (Monastery) GAZI
Tel: +30 2810 521266, 521281
It is almost a 5 km drive along the river through orange and plane trees. Built in the last period of the Venetian occupation, it is in complete harmony with the verdant scenery/landscape. During the Turkish occupation, the monastery constituted the center of the revolutionary action and even though it was severely damaged and pillaged it preserved its traditional architecture of a monastery.

Monastery of the Virgin at Savvathiana

MONI SAVATHIANON (Monastery) GAZI
Tel: +30 2810 841296, 220579
It is situated in a verdant ravine of Vasilikos mountain nearby Rodia. It is dedicated to Agios Antonios, the protector of the Monks, in whose honour an old cave-like church was built. It is amongst the most significant historic monasteries where in the Turkish occupation period monks from Agios Savas (on Almyros beach) found refuge due to its inaccessible position. The Monastery was severely damaged during the Turkish attack in 1648, though in 1745 reconstruction work commenced.

The Savathianon Monastery is 14km west of Iraklion on the Iraklion - Rodia - Savathianon Monastery road. The monastery is a very pleasant site full of plants and trees near the top of a hill with an eagles-eye view of the coastline of north Crete and a small ravine. The church of the Panagia is from the sixteenth century. The church of Agios Antonios dates from the fifteenth century, a large part of which was built within a cave. A small bridge connects the main part of the monastery with the church of Agios Antonios, and dates from 1535. The nuns support themselves by selling handmade articles.
