Kardiotissa Monastery is 6km above Avdou, after the village of Kera.
It is 45km southeast of Iraklion towards the Lassithi Plateau.
The monastery of Kera Kardiotissa is located in a pleasant setting, high in the
mountains of Dikte, with a view of the Pediada Valley and the sea. The monastery
celebrates on 8 September -- the birth of the Virgin Mary. It is a very old monastery
which was in existence during the second Byzantine period (961-1204). It is a
two-aisled church with beautifully decorated windows, and on the sides of the
church are large, blind arches decorated with bricks. Inside the church are fourteenth
century frescoes and old icons. The wooden altar screen of the church is very
attractive. The icon of the church was reputed to have been stolen in the fifteenth
century and is now in the church of Saint Alfonso on Esquiline Hill in Rome and
is named the Virgin of Perpetual Succour.
