The cathedral of Mytilene is situated in the centre of the city and is dedicated to St Athanasios. It dates in the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century and is built according to the architectural type of a domed basilica. In the interior it is ornamented with wall paintings in which influences from the Renaissance painting can be traced. The church's templon - which is presently being restored - constitutes one of the most beautiful examples of post-Byzantine wood carving on Lesbos. Its bell-tower is also of architectural interest as it strongly bears gothic elements.
The relics of St Theodoros of Byzantium - the patron saint of the city - are kept intact inside the church and thus the monument constitutes an important place of pilgrimage.

The church constitutes one of the most important places of pilgrimage on Lesbos. An impressive folklore festival takes place on the 15th of August.

Church of Panayia Ayia Sion (Virgin Mary)

It is at the small town Ayiassos. The name "Ayia Sion" comes from the old icon of the Virgin Mary, painted according to tradition by Saint Luke the Evangelist. In 803 AD -the period of Iconoclasm - the priest-monk Agathon brought it from Jerusalem, also known as "Ayia Sion", to the island. Agathon founded the monastery that soon became a pilgrimage and the nucleus of the town that formed around it. The present church was built in 1814 at around the time when the Monastery stopped functioning as such. In the courtyard there is an Ecclesiastical Museum with an interesting collection of manuscripts and valuable ecclesiastical items. It is one of the most significant pilgrimages of the island.

Church of Aghios Demetrios

KONTOPOULI (Village) LEMNOS (LIMNOS)

Church of Zoodochos Pigi

KOTZINOS (Port) LEMNOS (LIMNOS)
The church of Zoodochos Pigi which existed in the interior of the castle was recently renovated. Since 1415 it is referred to, as Zoodochos Pigi of Syngellos, an independent monastery. Ancient steps, quite deteriorated begin from the ant-temple and lead to an underground vault. In this room exists a holy water spring. In fact the spring is whatever remained of a water-supply construction once used by the castle during sieges. There is a tale about this water: Once a queen of the island tried to hide there when her enemies were running after her. She is the one who confuses anybody who insists to count the steps. They seem to be sometimes 84, sometimes 64, sometimes 57... and sometimes 51.

The required wood came in 1865 from Odysso, a donation from a Lemnian ship captain. The iconostasis is wooden-carved and full of byzantine icons. On the right side of the iconostasis is a icon of Agia Triada. Most of the icons are painted around the middle of the 18th century but older ones are also found

Church of St Therapon

MYTILINI (Town) LESVOS
Tel: +30 22510 22561
The church of St Therapon dominates the city of Mytilene owing to both its impressive mass but mainly to the originality of its architectural type. The erection of this monument commenced in the beginning of the 19th century by the flourishing at that time Christian quarter and was completed in 1935. The architect was Argyris Adalis, Ziller's student.
The architectural order follows the cross-in-square type; however, the monument constitutes a combination of elements from contemporary architectural trends that prevailed in the West (Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassicism etc). Gothic elements are prevalent as well, adding an impressiveness and a distinctive style to the monument.

PYRGI THERMIS (Village) MYTILINI
Tel: +30 22510 71165
The church of the Virgin (Panagia) Troulloti is built in the area of the Ano Pyrgoi at Thermi, in the eastern part of Lesbos, only 10 kms from the city of Mytilene. The church belongs to the type known as domed cross-in-square and dates in the 14th century. It constitutes one of the few Byzantine churches preserved on Lesbos.
Architectural members from more ancient buildings are incorporated in the masonry of the monument, two of which are marble relieves of particular interest in the south wall of the narthex. These two relieves are ornamented with both human figures as well as animal ones (such as that of a bear or a deer) and they were probably taken from the nearby sanctuary of Artemis Thermia. The interior of the church is decorated with wall paintings that date after its foundation and are only partially preserved.
Its wood carved templon dates in the mid-18th century and constitutes one of the most exquisite samples of post-Byzantine wood carving on Lesbos.

Church of Panayia Troulloti

The church is at Ano Pyrgoi Thermis, at the eastern part of the island. It is a cruciform Byzantine basilica with a dome, probably built in the 14th century and one of the oldest Christian monuments on the island that has remained virtually untouched since the Byzantine times. Ancient materials have been used in the construction - among others two marble bas-reliefs at the southern wall of the narthex (porch) with animal figures (deer and bear) possibly belonging to the nearby ancient temple of the Goddess Artemis Thermias. The interior has a fretwork icon-screen (18th century), one of the best samples of post-Byzantine ecclesiastical fretwork in Lesvos. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is called Troulloti because the dome (troullos) carries the hagiography not of Jesus Christ but of the Virgin Mary

Church of the Virgin (Panagia) Kakkaviotissa

THANOS (Village) LEMNOS (LIMNOS)
The chapel is located near the village of Zemata in the area of Thanos (about 4 km from Myrina). Remnant of one of the numerous monasteries on the island, it is known from 1305, a year in which it become part of the monastery of Agia Lavra, when some monks from the island of Ag. Eustratios who belonged to the monastery settled in the chapel in order to protect themselves from the Turkish raids. It is located at a spectacular position in a hardly-reached cave, on the top of a hill among impressive rocks, a location in which in Byzantine years there was probably an Early-Christian church and hermits.
On the first Tuesday after Easter there is a service at the chapel. On that day the icon of the Virgin (Panagia) Kakaviotissa -which for the rest of the year is kept by a family at Kontia- is brought at the chapel. According to tradition, the members of this family are the descendants of a laborer to whom the last monk gave the icon in question.

Monastery of Leimon (Moni Leimonos)

IERA MONI LIMONOS (Monastery) LESVOS
Tel: +30 22530 22289
The Monastery of Leimon is a men's convent, situated in the centre of Lesbos, at a 14 km distance from Kalloni, in a fertile basin. It was founded in Byzantine years and was inhabited until the occupation of the island by the Turks. The monastery was re-founded in 1526 by Saint Ignatios Agallianos, a significant personality who contributed in the rebirth of both education and the Church. At that time the well-known "Leimonias" school - which remained open until 1923 - functioned within the monastery's enclosure.
The katholikon (main church) was built in 1526, at the time of the monastery's reformation and was repeatedly restored. It is a three-aisled basilica with the roof of the middle aisle higher than the other two and a double narthex. It is decorated with interesting wall paintings that date in the second half of the 16th and the first half of the 17th century. Worth mentioning is the wooden-carved gilded templon in the church's interior.

Monastery of the Taxiarches

MANTAMADOS (Small town) MYTILINI
Tel: +30 22530 61214, 61359
The monastery is situated at a close distance from the village Mantamados, in the north-east part of Lesbos, 36 km from Mytilene and it constitutes one of the most significant places of pilgrimage on the island. In the past, it functioned as men's convent and is mentioned for the first time in an ecclesiastical document from 1661.
The small church of the 17th century was replaced with a bigger one of the 18th century, in the place of which the present church was erected from top to bottom in 1879, following the architectural type of the three-aisled basilica.
The monastery complex develops parametrically around the church, adding a fort-like character to it. In the church's interior and, more specifically, in a luxurious canopy from 1766, the wrought-in-relief icon of Taxiarches is kept, which -according to tradition- was made with soil and the blood of the monks who were slaughtered by pirates.
Of folklore interest is the custom of the bull's slaughter, which takes place on the anniversary of the church's inauguration.

MONI AGIOU IOANOU THEOLOGOU (Monastery) LESVOS
The monastery of Ypsilos, an active men's monastery, is dedicated to St John Theologos and is located in the west part of Lesbos, on the top of Mt Ordymnos, at a height of 634 m and at a distance of 81 km from Mytilene. Tradition places the foundation of the monastery in Byzantine years, before A.D. 800, and mentions it as "Monastery of Korakas", a name which was modified to "Monastery of Zisira" in the years of the Turkish occupation.
From its Byzantine phase very little information has been saved and is believed that the monastery was abandoned and devastated in late Byzantine years. The monastery flourishes again in post-Byzantine years but it is destroyed by fire. The existing katholikon (main church) was built in 1832 and constitutes part of a monastic complex, which develops around the katholikon.
In the monastery there is a particularly interesting vestry as well as a library with important manuscripts.
