CRETE (Island) GREECE
In Crete the sun shines three hundred days a year. The mild and tolerable
winter lasts from three to four months. The sun is often so hot that, as one journalist
wrote, the very palm-trees feel at home in Crete. The most delightful time of
year is spring or autumn. Snow, unknown on the plains, along the coast and in
the towns is seen only on the White
Mountains, on Psiloreitis
and on the Siteia Mountains during the winter season.

LAPPEI (Municipality) RETHYMNO
Nature must have been in a very good mood when it created landscapes
such as the Argiroupoli springs,
the immense sandy beach of Episkopi,
the area of "Five Virgins", the gorges, the forests and the mountains
of the area. The interchanges of the landscapes are constant. Starting form the
sea and the calm and fertile scenery of the plains and going up higher and to
the south we reach the massif to which nature has given such a form that with
aspect of imagination it could resemble a giant or a human figure.
Here the beauty is wild and the view enchanting. But in the open handily
gifted by nature region of the Municipality of Lappaioi even the most special
interests can be satisfied.
- The visitor can swim in the awarded (with the EEC’s golden
star) beach of Episkopi.
- He can also visit the Argiroupoli
springs, the area of the Five Virgins and enjoy the magnificent scenery.
- Visit the gorgeous lake of Kourna and the cave of the area which
was discovered in 1961.
- He can also walk along the beautiful gorges of Petre, of Kato
Poros, of Vilantheretho,
of Gonia.
- The wild nature lovers can take the European trail E4 through two
routes of extreme beauty, one of which crosses the enchanting forest of Koumania
in Alones.
The fauna and flora of the Municipality is also very rich. In the
sea of Episkopi he can come
across the turtle Caretta-Caretta. In the plain and mountainous zone he can see
haves, badgers, hedgehogs, hawks etc. In the rich flora besides the various bushes
he can stumble upon cyclamens, tulips, violets and other wildflowers and also
all of the aromatic flowers of Crete.
For more information he can address himself to the centre of Environmental Education
"Falkonas" which operates in the village
Karoti.

RHODES (Island) DODEKANISSOS
Rhodes is a diamond shaped island, and it measures 78 km in length and 30 km in width, making it the fourth largest island in Greece, preceded only by Crete, Euboea, and Lesbos. It is part of the volcanic island arc that extends from the Peloponnese through Crete and Karpathos to Asia Minor. Rhodes is only 20 km from the mainland of Asia Minor. The rock-rose is so plentiful and exuberant that Rhodes is often called the "Island of Roses."

MEGALI PRESPA (Lake) FLORINA
MIKRI PRESPA (Lake) FLORINA
A very interesting geological phenomenon which for centuries remained unexplained. These are underground tunnels which are penetrated by seawater in the Argostoli area. They subsequently go under the seabed, passing underground beneath the mountains of the island, where the seawater mingles with rainwater and ends up in Sami in the eastern part of the island. In 1963 Austrian geologists assisted in understanding the phenomenon with the help of a large quantity of dye.

KOUNOPETRA (Settlement) KEFALLONIA
Today it is just a large rock projecting from the sea. It is called Kounopetra because until the 1953 earthquakes it used to move rhythmically, making it a unique geological phenomenon. After the earthquake, displacement of sections of the seabed stabilised the base of Kounopetra, which accordingly ceased to move.

TINOS (Island) KYKLADES
Dovecots, or pigeon houses, are the main traditional feature on the
island.
These lovely, eye-catching constructions are examples of the inspiration
and creativity of folk art. They are usually built of slate. Local artists design
the mostly geometric patterns. The style may vary but always remains harmonious,
creating structures that often resemble embroidery. They are mostly
built on slopes or in gullies. The ground floor is used as a storehouse for farming
tools and supplies. The upper floor is used to house pigeons.
Tinos counts about 1.000 dovecots, carefully maintained and spread
all over the island. Those situated in the valley of Tarampadou
are especially impressive. Most of them were built in the Venetian period, during
the 18th and 19th century.

The wetlands, Koutavo lagoon and Livadi
swamp are the intermediate station to the migratory journey of many birds. The
visitor at the wetlands will also see swamp-turtles and other species of reptiles.
The mediterranean seal Monachus-monachus is often seen in the numerous
caves at the northern part of the island.
The sea-turtle Caretta-caretta prefers the sandy beaches at Potamakia,
near Skala as well as the
beaches of Xi and Megas Lakos
in Palliki.
Caretta-caretta lays its eggs there during the night from June to
August digging a pit to hide them. The eggs are incubated on their own in the
hot sand and 55 days later the baby turtles hatch out breaking the shell and head
all together towards the sea beginning the great adventure of life.

Popular architecture is extremely interesting in Cephalonia. Influences
from Western Europe as well as various transformed elements from the mainland
of Greece compose the character
of Cephalonian architecture.
The traditional houses in Cephalonia usually have two floors, with
an outdoor flight of stairs built of stone. The main and auxiliary rooms are spacious
and special care has been given to the decoration.
Nowadays, very few samples of traditional architecture can be seen
since most houses were destroyed by the earthquakes in 1953.
However those still existing today are exceptionally beautiful and
exude the inhabitants’ gentility and the builders’ craftsmanship.

EGINION (Ancient city) THESSALIA
TEGYRA (Ancient city) ORCHOMENOS
There is a view that the ancient town Tegyra or Tegyrae should be located there, 5kms to the north of Orchomenus. Plutarch has reported a temple and an oracle of Apollo in Tegyra, as well as two springs that one can still see today (Ekd. Athinon, Pausaniou Periegissis, vol. 5, p. 244, note 1).
