PLATANOUSSA (Village) IOANNINA
Dimitris Dragatakis was born in Platanoussa in 1914. He graduated
in violin from the National Conservatoire in Athens in 1939, and in composition
in 1955. He immediately revealed a marked inclination for avant-guard compositional
techniques, adopting a sort of neo-classicism reminiscent of Prokofiev and Shostakovich.
He went on to develop a freely atonal style which gradually became more individual
and recognisable, and which combined a wide variety of compositional elements
linked, one could almost say crystallised, by a refined instinct for sonorous
contrasts.
