  Dimitris Dragatakis was born in Platanoussa in 1914. He graduated in violin from the National Conservatoire in Athens in 1939, and in composition in 1955. He immediately revealed a marked inclination for avant-guard compositional techniques, adopting a sort of neo-classicism reminiscent of Prokofiev and Shostakovich. He went on to develop a freely atonal style which gradually became more individual and recognisable, and which combined a wide variety of compositional elements linked, one could almost say crystallised, by a refined instinct for sonorous contrasts.
