Spyros Mavropoulos was born in Corfu (Kerkyra), one of the Ionian
Islands, in northwest GREECE, in 1956. He graduated with diplomas in trumpet,
harmony, counterpoint, fugue & orchestration from the "Hellenic Conservatory"
and composition from the "Orpheus Conservatory". A proficient pianist and classical
guitarist, he has been composing since 1980. Many of his works have been performed
in Greece, Germany, Russia, USA, Italy & Australia by well-known ensembles, especially
brass. In 1979 he began teaching music in a high school in Corfu. From 1995 up
to 1998 he taught music harmony at the Music department of "Ionian University"
and the "Ionian Conservatory".
He has participated with original works or arrangement in more than
80 concerts. He has composed original works and arrangements for: Brass Quintet,
Brass Band, Wind Band, Symphonic Orchestra, Chorus, Woodwind quintet, Brass Trio,
Trio (piano, violin, clarinet), Duo (Clarinet - piano, tuba - piano, violin -
guitar).
His works and arrangements have been performed by "Melos Brass Quintet",
Brass Quintet", "Victorian Brass Quintet", "Tal Quintet", "Quintetto Sinihin",
"Trio Koryfo", "Wind band of Wurzburg", "Radio T.V Symphony Orchestra of Albania", "Philarmonica
wind orchestra of Corfu", "Chamber Woodwind Quintet", "Athens Brass Ensemble",
"Pindaros Brass Quintet", "Corfu Chorus", "Athens Philharmonia", "Wind Orchestra
of Moscow". Works of his have been presented in solo performances by Roger Bobo
(tuba) & David Cambell (clarinet). He has taken part in international composing
competitions, such as "Georgia University Composition Competition for trio brass"
(1994), the "Louis and Virginia Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition"
(1999), the "Philadelphia Youth Quintet Composition Contest" (1999), the "International
Guitar Festival" (1997), the "Wisconsin Sesquicentennial Brass Band Festival"
(1998), the 1st & 2nd "International Brass Course" of Kalavrita (1998-1999) and
the "1st Festival of Ionian Islands Composers" in Corfu (1999). Spyros Mavropoulos
along with other contemporary Corfiot composers is considered an advocate of the
renowned "Ionian Music School". Some of his composition and arrangements have
been recorded by famous ensembles. The "Music House Vryoni" has also published
a series of educational music books.
