SAINT-DENIS (Town) FRANCE
Catulliacus (Saint-Denis) Seine-St.-Denis, France.
The derivation of the place-name from the feminine name Catulla can be traced to the legend of St. Denis. However, a late Gallo-Roman cemetery has been found underneath the present cathedral, as well as some Gallo-Roman architectural blocks reused in Merovingian foundations. Two of these blocks have a design of long shields (scutum) and double axes and no doubt came from a public building nearby.
