TRICHONIDA LAKE (Lake) ETOLOAKARNANIA
Aitoloakarnania,
has more lakes than any other part of Greece. Among them is Trichonidha, which
is also the largest lake in Greece. Its rich fishing includes smelt, while three
species of fish are endemic to its waters, Cobitis trichonica, Silurus aristotelis
and Economidichtys trichonis. Around the lakeshore bamboo thickets are home to
large flocks of coot. In spring, the few remaining pockets of willow, poplar and
elm trees come alive with the song of the nightingales.
Overflow from Trichonidha finds its way into the neighbouring lake
of Lisimachia, and then into the river Dimikos, which thus collects the last reinforcements
from the generous flow of the Acheloos.
