Issus

   (Issos). A city in the southeastern extremity of Cilicia, near the head of the Issicus Sinus (Gulf of Iskenderun), and at the northern foot of the pass of Mount Amanus, called the Syrian Gates; memorable for the great battle in which Alexander defeated Darius Codomannus (B.C. 333), which was fought in a narrow valley near the town.
