Philip P. Argenti

1891 - 1974
The greatest benefactor of the Library of Chios is Philip P. Argenti (1891-1974). Philip Argenti was born in Marseilles the year 1891; son of Pantelis Argenti and his wife Fani Skilitzi. After his philological studies at Oxford he studied law in Athens. Fluent in languages, having a well rounded education and being very dynamic, he served as a diplomat in various Greek embassies.
His cultural interests and his love for Chios turned his attention to the investigation of the island’s modern history. With sound judgement, he investigated sources and tried first hand to put together the history of his beloved island.
He left behind a tremendous amount of published works including his own manuscripts; necessary foundations and resources for every researcher of Chian modern history. Amongst great accomplishments, most noteworthy are the following books:
• The Expedition of the Florentines to Chios (1599), 1934
• The Occupation of Chios by the Venetians (1694), 1935
• Chius Vincta or The Occupation of Chios by the Turks (1566), 1941
• Diplomatic Archive of Chios (1577-1841), 1954
• The Occupation of Chios by the Genoese (1346-1566), 1958
• The Religious Minorities of Chios, 1970
Argenti helped the library of Chios in many ways. He donated over 10,000 volumes of books and manuscripts. From 1948 he had already got involved in the addition of a second floor to the library building which would later house the antiques and other cultural artifacts from the Argenti collection. His family also covered the costs of enlarging the building in 1975-1978.
Of the many donations given by the Argentis family, a special comment must be made for the rich collection of paintings; portraits that are kept in a separate room on the second floor which serves as a museum.
Philip Argenti passed away in London, the year 1974. His life’s mission is a characteristic example of "chiolatria" or "adoration of Chios".
