AVDOU (Village) CHERSONISSOS
The paintings in this church are damaged, but the names Emmanuel and
Ioannis Fokas are inscribed on the walls.
Agios Antonios, at the north end of the village proper, dates from
the fourteenth century and has frescoes of only two colours. The painters were
probably Emmanuel and Ioannis Fokas.
The church of Agios Georgios is near the village cemetery. It is on
a dirt road going north towards the Kastelli. It contains frescoes from the fourteenth
or fifteenth century, probably by the Fokas brothers.
The Byzantine church of Pantanassa contains no pictures but has some
interesting artefacts. It uses cruciform architecture with a large central dome.
The top of the dome is decorated with bricks.
LIMENAS CHERSONISSOU (Small town) HERAKLIO
Hersonisos was also an important Byzantine area and the seat of an
archbishop from the first Byzantine period. A triple-aisled fifth century basilica
has been excavated in Kastri--one of the largest on Crete. The floors of the church
are covered with mosaic. East of the town there is another basilica dating from
the sixth century and its floors are also covered with mosaic.
