Castle of Riniasa (14th cent.)

The castle of Riniasa is located on a rapid high hill near the Ionian coastline, west of the village Riza and next to the village Lygia. It occupied a position regarded as a key-post, as it controlled both the pass of the Ionian sea and the mainland of Epirus.
The castle of Riniasa is identified with the Thomokastro, mentioned in the byzantine sources of the 14th century, under the power of the Despot (sovereign) of Epirus. Later it was called Riniasa and it has to be identified with the so-called castle of Arevessa, mentioned in the Venetian sources. Until the 19th century the castle was seized by successive conquerors, specifically Venetians, then Albanians, then once again by the Venetians. The castle is composed of four enclosures, of which the first one is not completely preserved. The third and fourth ones are of small dimensions.
The castle underwent several additions and restorations by Ali Pasha of Ioannina. The castle is known due to the struggle of the Souliotes, specifically the self-sacrifice of Despo Botsaris in the Tower of Dimoulas. She sought refuge there when the Turks invaded the castle of Riniasa and killed many of the Souliotes.
