The Municipality of Zacharo was founded by Law 2539/1997 (Kapodistria Plan), consists of 20 Municipal Districts, the former municipality of

and the former communities of:

3. Arini,
4. Artemida,
5. Gianitsochorion,
6. Kakovatos,
7. Kalidona,
8. Lepreon,
9. Makistos,
10. Milea,
11. Minthi,
12. Neochorion,
13. Xirochorion,
14. Prassidakion,
15. Rodina,
16. Smerna,
17. Schini,
18. Taxiarches,
19. Chryssochori (Trypes).
Municipality seat is Zacharo, small town of the homonymous municipal district. The first authorities were elected in October 1998. The population was 11041 inhabitants, according to the 1991 census.
