The Municipality of Polykastron was founded by Law 2539/1997 (Kapodistria Plan), consists of 10 Municipal Districts, the former municipality of
1. Polykastron,
the former communities of:
1. Axiochorion,
2. Aspros,
3. Vafiochorion,
4. Evzoni,
5. Mikron Dassos,
6. Pefkodassos,
7. Pontoiraklia
and the settlements of:
1. Irinikon,
2. Korona of the former community of Akritas.
Municipality seat is Polykastro, city of the homonymous municipal district. The first authorities were elected in October 1998. The population was 11998 inhabitants, according to the 1991 census.
