The Municipality of Edessa was founded by Law 2539/1997 (Kapodistria Plan), consists of 10 Municipal Districts, the former municipality of:
1. Edessa
and the former communities of:
1. Agras,
2. Vryta,
3. Karydia,
4. Messimerion,
5. Nissi,
6. Platani,
7. Rizarion,
8. Sotira,
9. Framouria.
Municipality seat is Edessa, city of the homonymous municipal district. The first authorities were elected in October 1998. The population was 25051 inhabitants, according to the 1991 census.
