For the nature and ecology lovers, special interest will present the hydrobiotope of Almyros. In all written evidences since 15th century, the travellers who passed from Almyros have pointed out the outstanding natural beauty of the area. Though it only extends at an area not bigger than 88 hectares, the hydrotopes, with the spring, the lake, the river and the seasonal swamps, comprises an area of high ecological value. The number of the plant species comes up to 200 and some species have been described as rare at an international level and have been protected institutionally. In addition, a great number of inverterbrata, fish, reptiles, turtles and birds have been listed, the majority of which is protected and is threatened with extinction. Finally, the fauna of the mammals in Almyros includes at least 7 species. Among them the hedgehog, zourida (weasel) and kaligianou (stoat) are protected. Almyros' hydro-viotope is considered to be a resort area for the entire residential block of the new Municipality of Gazi and the neighboring Municipality of Heraklion as well as for environmental tourism. The interventions that are going to be carried out at the hydrotope -with direct aim the protection of the natural environment and its becoming known-regard the creation of an Environmental Education Center, the creation of an Information Center on Almyros Hydrotope, walking and recreation zone at the channel, parking spaces, placing special installations and bridge construction.
