Kalama Delta

THYAMIS (River) EPIRUS
The river Kalamas, created through the centuries, the delta which is roughly defined by the triangle Igoumenitsa-Ragio-Sagiada.
The mountains and hills which are in the plain today, used to be islands but, gradually, due to the silts, the area was turned into a swamp, and in the 1960s, with the extensive draining works and mainly with the diversion of the river bed, today’s plain was created.
Today, Kalamas flows north of the mountain of Skoupitsa (Mavronoros) and south of the hill of Mastilitsa (Maskelinitsa). It has created a new delta with its silts, that is continuously extended at a quick pace.
We can visit the delta from Igoumenitsa on the way to Sagiada. At the village Ragio, before the dam, we turn left on to the dirt road. As soon as we see, on our left, the elevated bridge of Kalamas, which is the last one, we cross it and turning left we move on to the end of the dirt road. We continue on foot, until we reach the point where the river meets the sea.
The river beds are full of plane-trees which give way to the "armyrikia". Herds of wild horses are a pleasant surprise that the delta has in store for us. In order to visit the little islands within the delta and to observe the thousands of birds which nest in the wetland, we will have to go by caique from the neighboring Sagiada. We can sail to the last bridge, and the rout is fascinating.
