Pholoe forest

FOLOE (Mountain) ILIA
From Olympia the road leads to the district of Lala and the mountains of Pholoe.
The village of Lala is built at an altitude of 600 meters, in a lush area filled with cherry and walnut trees.
The village boundaries mark the start of the enormous oak forest of Pholoe, redolent with legends and traditions. Pholoe was the kingdom of the benevolent centaur, Pholos, who gave shelter to Herakles.
At 800 meters, the settlement of Lambia (Divri) stands out, drenched in greenery. It consists of seven neighborhoods, each with its own name, church and fountain. A bit further on lies the village of Tripotama. Ilia has so many delightful mountain villages.
Dotting tree-filled slopes or tucked away in the heart of a forest, they seem like hamlets out of a fairy tale.

Kalogria Lagoon

KALOGRIA (Settlement) PATRA

Strofylia forest

Along the beach, the forest of Strofylia, which owes its name to the extensive fir formations (strofylia) that dominate the area, continues, through centuries, to have a powerful existence. According to some ancient writers, the forests in the area were boundless. But, during the last centuries, they were highly cleared in order to turn into arable land. Strofylia forest presents alternations in its composition as in its sight.
The pine forest appears either as a pure forest of Pinus hallepensis or as a pure forest of Pinus pinea or as a mixed pine forest.
Pinus hallepensis presents an extreme ecological interest since it's the most extensive forest in Greece and one of the biggest in Europe. In the pine forest, the mushrooms, in an impressive variety, contribute to the natural recycling of the elements.
"Accipiter nisus", "Cuculus canorus", "Buteo buteo" e.t.c. are the main species of the bird-fauna in the pine forest, while "Martes foina" and "Mustela nivelis" are the most characteristic mammal species.
In the inner-land the pine forest meets the forest of the oak tree "Quercus marcolepis". In the oak forest, which is more open and sunny, there is a larger variety of reptiles and birds such as "Carduelis carduelis" , "Fringilla coelebs", "Corvus corone cornix" and "Pica pica".

Kotychi lagoon

LECHENA (Municipality) ILIA
Brackish, coastby shallow (30-40 cm) lagoon, which is surrounded by reeds at the side of land, while at the seaside it is surrounded by an oblong sandy isle, in the center of which there is an orifice of communication with the sea. Kotychi covers an expanse of nearly 800 hectares and it is the largest lagoon of Peloponnese. It is characterized by a big variety of flora, while it iis of great ecological interest, because it is the southwest lagoon in the western corridor of migration, for many birds. Every winter 5 to 10 thousand wild ducks of many species gather there to spend the winter. The winter ornithological picture is completed with hundreds of other aquatic birds plus many beautiful swans. During the spring and the autumn migration period, Kotychi turns into a small paradise. Lots of aquatic birds find the suitable conditions to rest and to find food in the shallow water.
