The lighthouse was built in 1901 with a stone tower of 25 meters high and focal plane of 110 meters. The English built it, the bigger that they built in Greece, in order to make easier the shipping at the sea narrow between Kythira and Elafonisos.
The lighthouse is located at the Spathi cape, which is the northern spot of Kythira, close to the Karavas settlement and next to Agios Nikolaos beach.
