Folklore-Historical Museum of Larissa

  The largest folklore museum in Thessaly and one of the largest in Greece owes its existence to the tireless activity of the Folklore Society of Larissa, which was founded in 1974 with the aim to collect and preserve the material remains of the past folk life and culture of the region. Thus the Society formed the first museum collection, which was enriched and expanded and eventually became the Folklore and Historical Museum of Larissa. The museum was established in 1981 and two years later it opened to the public. In 2000 the Ministry of Culture completed the new museum building of high standards and up to date facilities, which allowed the full utilization and display of the collections.
  The museum collections currently include about 20.000 objects, in their majority dating back to the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries. The museum prides itself on the unique wood stamps, the stamped fabrics from Tyrnavos, the pre-industrial rural tools and equipment and a collection of engravings from the 15th century onwards. To these are added works of secular and ecclesiastical silverware, ceramics and bronze ware, embroidery and of course the local costumes. From fishermen’s nets and farmers’ tools to the family home, from the musical isntruments to the war weapons, the exhibits embrace every aspect of traditional culture, having as a focal point the region of Thessaly.
  The Museum organizes various activities and events for the general public, including educational programs, temporary exhibitions, lectures and courses on traditional crafts.
