The fortified settlement
of the Late Classical and the Hellenistic periods, located at Paramythia,
on the slopes of Mt. Corilas, is identified with the ancient city of Elea.
The city was enclosed by a strong polygonal wall,
1550 m. long, with the main monumental gate
on the east side. The remains, revealed so far by the excavations, belong mainly to public buildings,
such as stoas,
a small temple
and the Hellenistic theatre, which delineated the area of the city’s agora.
