Alexandroupolis International Airport is located 7 km east of Alexandroupoli city, and specifically on the E90 highway, which links Greece to Turkey. It was established in 1944. In 1955 it was recognized as an international airport and in 1975 built this infrastructure (buildings and runway).
The airport has the name "Demokritos", since 1992, in honor of the great ancient atomic philosopher, who was born in Abdera of Thrace.

According to a statement issued by Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority on 04/12/2010 the operation hours of Alexandroupolis International Airport from 3/29/2015 to 10/24/2015 are: Everyday 09:00-14:30 and 17:00-22:30.
