This is the most important church of Hermoupolis and nowadays the
seat of the Mitropolis (bishop). Its construction began in March 1824. It may
have been designed by the architect Evstratios Smirnaos, who also was the architect
of the church of the Panagia of Tinos. Both churches show the same architectural
pattern. The precinct of the church was generally used for meetings, while its
cells served as a hospital. After 1831, the church underwent many changes. In
1917, the building was extended and the chapel of Agios Fanourios was added to
its northern side. Three gates lead to the precinct of the church. Its floor is
decorated with mosaics of red, white and black pebbles. The Bishop's Residence,
to the North of the church, is a two-storeyed building with arched windows.
