At Nissiopi small island there is a big impressive lighthouse that was constructed in 1861 by the French Company of Ottoman Lighthouses. Its tower height is 20 meters and its focal plane 53 meters. It belongs to Greek Lighthouses Network in 1912. After Lesvos was liberated, the Lighthouses Service took the charge of it, in 12 January 1916, the machines were repaired and the lighthouse was staffed. Since 1991 it operates by the old machinery of optical rotation, where an electric lamp has been placed in.
Megalonissi is a small island at the west side of Lesvos island, opposite Sigri village. It’s mainly known as Nissiopi, but also as Meganissi. The island as well as the sea area around is section of the wider territory of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos, a Natural Monument. Alongside, the Nissiopi is a protected area and is included in the Greek National List of Natura 2000.
