Well preserved castle dated to the 13th century A.D. It is one
of the most representative examples of Frankish castles in Central Greece.
Two concentric enclosures, 1.40 - 2.00 m thick, interrupted by square
towers surround the main acropolis. A bulwark on the north side of the inner
enclosure is preserved. The castle was erected on the side of a Classical - Hellenistic
enclosure, the building material of which has been employed for the construction
of the Frankish castle. The ancient city Pharygai or Nikaia is placed here. During
the Frankish period there was the seat of the marquisate of Voudonitsa.
Restoration works were undertaken by the Archaeological Service .
