An octagonal dome church, built in the 12th century (1149-1150).
According to the tradition the church is related to the Byzantine Emperor Andronicos II Paleologos (1282-1328).
The church, initially, was dedicated to the Virgin Mary Hodegitria, as the history says. However, after the Greek War of Independence in 1821, it was rededicated to Agia Sofia as it was believed to be a replica of Agia Sofia in Istanbul, the former Byzantine capital.
