The
site is situated at the plain east of the modern village Hotousa and is surrounded
by walls of late Classical or Hellenistic date. Around the area dated to the historic
period, on the site "Agios Georgios" and "Kouroupa", there are remains of prehistoric
settlement. In the plain of Hotousa-Kandela there are also remains of the earthen
bank of Kaphyates and prehistoric catabothre.
The first excavations were undertaken by the director of the ephorate
Dr. Th. Spyropoulos during the last decade. An ancient temple, dated to the 4th
century B.C. was partly excavated. An early Christian Basilica (5th century A.D.)
had been built above the temple.
The most important monuments of the site are:
The ancient walls.
The ancient
temple and the Early Christian Basilica.
