The
archaeological site of Nas is in western Ikaria. On the banks of the river
Halaris, in an idyllic landscape ,the goddess Artemis was worshipped from Classical
until Roman Imperial times. The ancient temple of Artemis Tauropolos (the "Tauropolion")
is the principal monument at the site.
Excavations by N. Politis in 1932 confirmed the presumed existence
of a temple of Artemis at Nas and the existence of the ancient state of the Istoi
in neighbouring Christos ton Rachon. Excavations at the site
were resumed by S. Samartzidou in the period 1989-1991.
