CHIOS (Island) NORTH AEGEAN
CHIOS: A Historic Island on the Verge of "Discovery"

Greek & Roman Geography (ed. William Smith)

Chios

CHIOS (Ancient city) GREECE
The chief town of Chios, as already observed, had the name of Chios, though Strabo does not mention the name of the city, but the passage is probably corrupt. It was on the east side of the island, and is now named Scio, though it seems to be called Kastro in some maps. The city and its environs are like Genoa and its territory in miniature. Some authorities (Dionys. Perieg. 535) place it at the foot of Pellenaeus, which seems to be the same name as Strabo's Pelinaeus. Probably the name of the high range of Pelinaeus may have extended as far south as the town of Chios. Chandler could not see either stadium, odeum or theatre, the usual accompaniments of every Greek town, and we know that Chios had a theatre. As there was a marble quarry in the vicinity, there was abundance of building materials. The stones of the old Greek town have, doubtless, been used for building the modern town, for marbles and basreliefs are seen in the walls of the town and of the houses.

Phanae

FANE (Ancient city) CHIOS
Strabo's description commences on the east side of the island, where the chief town, Chios, was situated, which had a harbour capable of holding 80 ships. His periplus is southwards. He next mentions the Posidium, now Cape Mastico, the southern point of the island; then Phanae (Thuc. viii. 24), where there was a deep recess, a temple of Apollo, and a grove of palm-trees. There was also a point or headland at Phanae (Steph. s. v. Phanai), which Ptolemy also mentions under the name Phanaea, Livy (xliv. 28) mentions the Promontorium Phanae as a convenient, place to sail from to Macedonia. It seems to correspond to Port Mesta, on the western coast...

Chios

CHIOS (Island) NORTH AEGEAN
The modern Scio. One of the largest and most famous islands of the Aegean, lay opposite to the peninsula of Clazomenae, on the coast of Ionia. It was colonized by the Ionians at the time of their great migration, and remained an independent and powerful maritime state till the defeat of the Ionian Greeks by the Persians, B.C. 494, after which the Chians were subjected to the Persians. The battle of Mycale, 479, freed Chios from the Persian yoke, and it became a member of the Athenian League, in which it was for a long time the closest and most favoured ally of Athens; but an unsuccessful attempt to revolt, in 412, led to its conquest and devastation. Chios was celebrated for its wine and marble. Of all the States which aspired to the honour of being the birthplace of Homer, Chios was generally considered by the ancients to have the best claim; and it numbered among its natives the historian Theopompus, the poet Theocritus, and other eminent men. Its chief city, Chios (Khio), stood on the eastern side of the island.

Pelinaio

The Pelinaio stands at 1297 meters above sea level. The Pelinaio mountain is the highest mountain in Chios, It is visible from Kambia - Viki and Spartounda and Agrelopo, a village just past Kambia beach., Agrelopo was, and still is closely tied with Kambia as the people share the surrounding area, Today Agrelopo is unfortunately uninhabited. At the peak of the Pelinaio, stands the church of Agia Triatha (the holy trinity). A service is held there every year at it's feast day high upon the mountain. The best way to get to the church is from Viki, as the road to the Pelinaio from Kambia is very steep. Outside of the church is a little platia (terrace) where the faithful stand during the service, it is said to look full if 5 people are standing on it and also said to look full if 100 people are standing there, it is like the platia expands as people come to the service. The views on a nice clear summers day is said to be the most breath taking experience one could have, the whole of the island is visible and on a very clear day surrounding islands in the Aegean Sea can also be seen.

Aghio Galas, is built on the top of a rocky mountain Underneath the village there is a complex of caves. The village of Aghio Galas has shown continual human existence over the course of 8,000 years. It is located 70 km northwest of the town of Chios and is one of the oldest Neolithic places in the Aegean area. From the 6th century B.C., man lived within the large caves located beneath this village. Archeologists have discovered numerous shells (vase fragments), tools, bones, and worshipping objects dating from the Neolithic period. The caves however, have not been completely examined or explored. These caves are of great interest as they maintain ceilings decorated with stalactites.
Significant remnants of the medieval fortress have been preserved in the village. This village is of substantial importance to researchers for its popular architecture, unique house designs, preservation of local linguistic idioms and the villagers' occupation with agriculture. The inhabitants' homes are held up by one single column, a scene that depicts the most primitive structure possible for permanent residence. This primitive scene in conjunction with the particular architectural scheme of each house designates Aghio Galas as a rare architectural monument on the whole.

Anavatos

ANAVATOS (Settlement) CHIOS
Anavatos is a Byzantine tower-village that is found in the central region of Chios. It is quite impressive due to the fact that it plunges into a large granite rock at the top of the cliff. Although it is a deserted village, it still preserves its history, a sensation often encountered by visitors when wondering through its stone-paved streets. The Greek War of Independence (1821) and the Massacre of 1822 describe an important chapter in the island’s history and are directly associated with Anavatos.
The Church of the Taxiarchis (the Archangel) is still preserved. It is the only building which stills stands out amidst this living ghost-town. Not far from the wall’s gate, there is an overbearing structure which protrudes amongst the buildings along the east side. It is the so called "three-story" building, consisting of an olive oil press, school and water reservoir and the Church of the Theotokos (the Virgin Mary). Anavatos, with its tower-like houses, arches and steep cobbled roads, emphasizes the force of nature and accentuates the supremacy of the heavens.

The view from the stone square on the west side of the village offers a breathtaking view of the crystal waters of Elinda Bay and the Aegean Sea. On a clear day, visitors will be in awe of the view of the island of Psara.
