Archaeological Site of Stryme

  Stryme was founded in the middle of the 7th century BC by Thasian colonists. The settlement owed its prosperity to the control and exploitation of the fertile hinterland, suitable for the cultivation of cereals.
  The first excavations on the site were carried out in the late 1950's by Prof. G. Bakalakis and brought to light an impressive establishment for the water supply of the city, comprising tunnels, gutters, and wells, a trully magnificent achievement of ancient engineering. The excavations were continued by Diamantis Triantaphyllos, Director of the 19th Ephorate and have so far uncovered large sections of the ancient city.
